I think this book was set in the early 2000's, and may have been written in that year range as well, when email was still the most widely used form of communication. I initially thought this was some sort of romance story, but the ending seems to be more "tragic".

In the beginning, the lady sends an email to a magazine company (if that's what you call 'em) to unsubscribe from them, but ends up sending it to a random guy instead. They started exchanging emails for the rest of the book. They'd share information about themselves, and eventually, they started to talk about how they look like in real life. So they decided to meet up in a cafe (not sure about this though). Initially, the lady was okay with this. But in the ending of the book, the lady stood the guy up, and emailed him why she didn't want to go. She told the guy that she had a partner who, on the day of their meet-up, asked her who she was meeting with. The partner implied in his question that he thinks she'll be meeting up with her secret email pen pal. When the lady heard this, she felt... shameful (I think) for talking to a guy behind her partner's back, so she decided not to go to the meet-up. The guy sends a few more desperate emails to the lady before he's finally unable to reach her. And that's the summary of what I can remember from the book.

I've found the book now. Its official english title is "Love Virtually", and it was written by Daniel Glattauer. :)
