September is the month of fall. The kids are back in school, the hectic summer pace starts to relent and a slight chill returns to the air. What better time to grab a blanket, a cup of your favorite warm beverage, and your pet and make yourself cozy?
And that is what we are doing this month—reading a cozy animal mystery. It doesn't matter whether the animal is the crime solver or a constant companion as long as they are part of the story.

Other animals
Detective Mole by Robert Quakenbush
Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann
The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse by Bruce Hale
Flatfoot Fox and the Case of the Missing Eye by Eth CLifford
Even The Bad Guys and Zootopia fit the category. As long as it contains an animal, a mystery and makes you feel good.
Heres the wiki

I do have a couple of series on the go that would fit here, but I am unlikely to get to the next in either of them till the end of the month, when they become ROOTs.
Arsenic and Old Books by Miranda James. Librarian and crime solver Charlie Harris is accompanied by his Maine Coon cat Diesel.
Dog is in the Details by Neil S. Plakcy. University administrator and crime solver Steve Lavitan is accompanied by his golden retriever Rochester.

I'm not really a mystery reader so I had to rely on my grandchildren for this one! I will be reading Mice of the Mausoleum by Kimberly Coleman.
4LibraryCin
Pretty sure I have quite a bit that will fit here. Just need to choose which one(s)!

I'm sure mine will involve a cat! I'll see which one is available when I'm ready to listen or read.
7LadyoftheLodge
I love the graphic! My cats approve. I have quite a few that will fit here.

>5 clue: I dread finishing the series, I've enjoyed having it as a go to so much. I'm already fishing around for a series to take it's place when I'm finished. I probably won't finish it this year so I'm really worrying ahead!

Susan Wittig Albert’s Beatrix Potter Cottage Tales are cozy and fun. Beatrix Potter and the animals in the town help solve the mysteries. I have read all of them, so I think I will read Maigret and the Yellow Dog. I’ve not read anything by him, so looking forward to it.

>10 marell: Those sound like fun reads, taking a BB for the first Beatrix Potter Cottage Tale

Grands can't find the aforementioned book. I'm going with Footprints in the Frosting a cozy/dog mystery free on Kindle!
13LadyoftheLodge
I am just starting Round Up the Usual Peacocks by Donna Andrews. I am hoping for the usual hilarity found in these novels.
14VivienneR
I'm planning to read The Cat Who Sniffed Glue by Lilian Jackson Braun.
15LadyoftheLodge
>14 VivienneR: I loved those cat mysteries when they first came out, and I still enjoy them. Time for a re-read.
16VivienneR
>15 LadyoftheLodge: I love them too but saved several titles for the right moment.

I've finished two of the Cat Who Series, The Cat Who Moved A Mountain and The Cat Who Wasn't There.

Grey Matters / Clea Simon
3.5 stars
Ducie is a grad student working on her thesis. Just after she meets with her advisor, she comes out of the building only to stumble upon a murder victim, another man in the English department. In her personal life, she is feeling lonely as her boyfriend is spending almost all his time working; her best friend/roommate has a new boyfriend; her beloved pet cat, Mr. Grey, had recently passed away, although his ghost visits her, still, and she has a new black and white, still unnamed, kitten.
Like with the first book in the series (this is the 2nd), there was more academic-speak in the book than I would have liked. I wasn’t necessarily all that excited to hear, in so much detail, about Dulcie’s thesis. I wasn’t sure initially if I would continue the series after this one (primarily) because of that. Not a big fan of ghost-cats talking, either. But as the end came around, I decided I like it enough that I would try the next book, as well.

I finished my first Georges Simenon Maigret mystery, Maigret and the Yellow Dog. Now I’m intrigued and would like to read books more by this author.

I listened to Thereby Hangs a Tail by Spencer Quinn, the 2nd in the Chet and Bernie series. The audio was narrated by Jim Frangione, who I think did a wonderful job of narrating as a dog.

>27 marell: I enjoyed the Maigret mysteries I have read, and would like to read more of them.

The book I am reading for RandomKIT also fits here. The Black Cat Sees His Shadow by Kay Finch
31sallylou61
I read Out of Hounds by Rita Mae Brown for this challenge. This is in her Sister Jane series about fox hunting, and is the first book I have read in the series. I decided to read it since it is about fox hunting which is popular here in Virginia. The novel contains numerous characters -- people, foxhounds, horses, foxes, birds, and pets -- all with names (and listed in the front of the book with brief descriptions). Some hunts are described, but much of the talk (of which there is a lot) concerns stolen paintings by Alfred Munnings of women riding side-saddle. There are also a number of deaths, mainly of men who were involved in transporting the stolen paintings. At the end, the mysteries are solved although none of the animals are really involved in solving them (as in Rita Mae Brown's Mrs. Murphy cat books where the animals play a larger role).

This month I reread The Cat Who Sniffed Glue, by Lilian Jackson Braun.
33VivienneR
>32 rabbitprincess: I read the same book! I'm sure a reread will come sometime in the future.

>33 VivienneR: It's my favourite book in the series, although I do like the first few books as well.

COMPLETED Dog Is In the Details by Neil S. Plakcy. in this series, Rochester, Steve Levitan's golden retriever, helps him solve mysteries by finding bodies and by pointing him to clues.
