Found: spy and refugee story in Africa

I read a book a while back that I really enjoyed but cannot now remember the author or title. It was the story mainly if a young woman in Africa whose husband had been killed in a fishing accident and she and her son try to make their way to Europe. Along the way they travel by bus and are picked on until an undercover agent boards the bus to track down a warlord and protects them. They get sold into a quarry but escape and make it to Nice. Any help with this title would be great please as it’s driving me crazy. Thanks.
