I'm in my sixties and read these books a long time ago, so I'm guessing they were published pre-1980s. I think there were at least three books in the series. I have searched Google and they are not on any of the "best post-apocalyptic" book lists. Maybe they weren't that good, but I remember enjoying them, especially the first book.

The premise was post nuclear war. It was set in the United States. The emphasis was on how different pockets of survivors had developed widely disparate cultures.

In the first book you meet a community where the women are the leaders and the men are more domestic and creative. A husband and wife from this community are the main characters of the book. The husband leaves for some reason, and when his wife discovers he's gone, she tries to follow him.

Along the way they meet different people, and here's where you start seeing the wide variety of cultures that have developed. I remember one culture was hostile to men. I remember the wife learned how to make soap from a woman that had been taught by her husband when he passed through.

At some point they are involved with two different groups who are fighting each other, so they are on different sides of the conflict.

In one of the later books there is some crazy plot line about a building being built like the inside of an intricate shell.

Name that book!

Some of what you mentioned doesn't sound familiar, (it's been a long time since I read them,) but you may have read books from The Pelbar Cycle

Also, I don't think I ever read the first book! I thought "The Ends of the Circle" was the first book.
