A "winter's tale" in the time of Shakespeare was defined as an idle tale, ballad, or legend, suitable for telling on a cold winter's night. The story was not intended to be realistic, and could include fairy tales, myths, or ghost stories.
Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale is a 4-act play, considered one of his lesser-known works. A conflict between two best friends forms the main thread of this play. The play features suspected infidelity, the birth of a royal baby, a pastoral romance, and forgiveness and reconciliation.
Participants in this challenge might want to read the play itself, as well as other works that are related to themes in The Winter's Tale. Another option could include stories suitable for a winter's night, or about winter or wintry events. The choice is up to the reader!

I will be reading Billy's A Winter Tale. I saw this play in person at the New Shakespeare Theatre when I visited England in 2003. My friends and I sat there in astonishment as the first act was in progress as we could not understand the first word--and it was in English! They had such "accents" and spoke so fast that we could not understand them! We laughed! Hurriedly at intermission we went to the lobby and bought the play in pamphlet format and read as much as we could before acts three and four. Good times! W..e.....d..o..n..t. .s p e a k .... t h a t...... f a s t .......
h e r e ..... LOL! (and of course, we don't have an accent! ;))

I've got The Gap of Time, Jeanette Winterson's adaptation of The Winter's Tale, on my online library list. Perhaps now is its time to shine.

I am reading a book of three stories On the Way to Christmas, all set in winter time. The first one is a story of redemption and mending of friendships after years of nastiness and condescending behavior. That theme seems to fit with this challenge.

I'm hoping to read the play, but if that doesn't happen I expect I'll be reading some "winter's tales" that fit the category.

the birth of a royal baby instantly put me in mind of The Crystal Cave and that fantastic winter scene in Tintagel when Arthur is born...

I think I will read A Winter’s Tale but I might add The Master of Ballantrae. Winter reads that I like are The Blue Carbuncle, The Chimes, Cricket on the Hearth and Christmas Carol. I enjoy (not the right word) read Ethan Frome in the winter.

>2 Tess_W: ha! I spent the second year of my degree in Texas. I came home speaking perfect RP English - but at about 2/3rds speed! I had people finishing my words for me I'd slowed down so much. Took a good couple of months to get back up to normal speed! >:-D
