Hi! First post here. I'm trying to remember a book that I read as a child (maybe age 7-12) in the 80's or early 90's. I don't have a lot of details, but I remember it being about kids that were involved in some kind of science experiment or stuck in a room that was all white. Maybe there was a red light or something similar they had to learn to interpret in order to get things for their survival. Hopefully this was a book and not some crazy dream of mine!

House of Stairs by William Sleator. It's a trippy one all right!

Oh my gosh, you are amazing!! I don't know how long I've been thinking about this book. Now that I have an avid reader of my own, I'm trying to think of the memorable books from my childhood. I finally figured out another one that had stumped me...The Girl Who Owned a City.

This one comes up semi-regularly because it's both bizarre and memorable. I only ever read it once, but it really stays with you!
