Spitsticks & Multiples - The History of the Society of Wood Engravers 1920-46 by Simon Lawrence - FLEECE PRESS SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION of 145 COPIES 2022
A PICTORIAL REVIEW
Introduced by Joanna Selborne.
Two volumes.
22 tipped-in prints printed from the original blocks.
Dark blue endpapers.
Quarter bound in dark-blue cloth with wood-engraved patterned paper covers.
Mid-blue cloth slipcases.
Orange ribbon page marker.
35.8x30.5cm.
636 pages over two volumes
145 copies
£755
I started reading volume one of these two huge books and was wondering what on earth I had actually bought. Page after page of rather uninteresting (to me) minutes of the Society of Wood Engravers from almost a century ago, with one small scandal embedded to relieve the boredom, but almost no engravings.
Then at page 131, it all changed, and what a delight the book became. Almost every page was printed with the most magnificent wood engravings to ever come out of England. Each page turned bought new delights, and as I have the special edition, there were also engravings printed from the original blocks, so the experience became a tactile one as well as visual.
Throughout the next 500 pages, across the two volumes, the engravings continued in every style imaginable, demonstrating the skill, imagination and quirks of hundreds of different engravers.
Anyone who loves engravings must have a copy of this work. The amount of work that Simon has put into this publication is amazing.
This is a very long pictorial review, as I could not stop myself from photographing page after page of these wonderful pictures.
Slowly peruse and enjoy.

This book is the culmination of Simon Lawrence's work over the past four decades as one of the world's premier printers of wood engravings directly from the blocks. What wcarter's generous selection of photos demonstrates is that the illustrations that were not printed from blocks and tipped in are reproduced to an astonishingly high standard. This two-volume set is both an historical reference and a never-ending supply of eye candy. Anyone with an interest in or appreciation of fine wood-engraving should strongly consider acquiring this edition.
