Excited to have just added this volume to my Venice collection.

Life on The Lagoons by Horatio Brown
1900, London; Rivingtons, 3rd Ed.

Hand painted vellum binding. Raised bands on spine with blind embossed fleur de lis shapes. Formerly owned by wealthy industrialist Samuel Mather and kept in the library at the Mather mansion in Cleveland. I love his bookplate of the factories he owned on Lake Erie. Also love the notation of what room, bookcase and shelf the book was kept in.

Composite image of cover and spine.

That binding is gorgeous. And how fun to have the location - he (or whoever took care of his library) was clearly a very methodical and organized person. I wouldn't mind staying in someone's guest room with this sort of book on the shelf!

Gorgeous! Congratulations!
I have recently started avoiding placing fine books in guest rooms - people are less used to handling books correctly. If something damaged, I might not be aware about it for years.
