Favourite Saints

When I saw this article in the Tablet today it reminded me that St Cuthbert is one of my favourites. I studied in Durham, worked as a volunteer at the Society of St Vincent de Paul's children's camp on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), walked the St Cuthbert's Way pilgrimage along the English Scottish border, visited Durham Cathedral (which I still believe is the most impressive cathedral in the world) frequently, and spent a lot of time in the north east of England where his name is a byword.

Anybody else want to draw attention to a favourite saint or two?

It certainly comes close! And why limit it to cathedrals? There can't be many buildings of any sort that can compete.

And of course, as a needlewoman, St. Cuthbert's vestments are such a treasure.

The name I took for Confirmation is Judith. I was taken with her bravery and just git’erdone attitude. When her city was besieged by the Assyrians, she lied her way into the tent of the leader, Holofernes, and cut off his head after he was drunk.

Your post reminded me that I have two very lovely books that feature holy cards introducing the saints. The authors are Barbara Calamari and Sandra Dipasqua. I believe they have an online presence as well, posting about the saints.

I had used these books for the teens in their Confirmation classes, and never deeply explored the books myself. They are collected by catagories and feature one saint per page, all in glorious color plates.

I’ve got them out now to enjoy them.
