Found: Old SciFi short story with shape shifting alien eating people

EDIT, SOLVED: Someone on another forum found the story. It's a Bob Shaw story called "An Uncomic Book Horror Story" from 1975.

I've been trying for years to find a sci fi story I read as a kid. It had a stranded alien (I think the alien is described as having crashed thousands of years before) using shape shifting abilities to stalk and eat people in a town or city. The main character figures out that this is happening to people at dusk or at night, and decides to inform the authorities. He goes to mail a letter to the government, but he's made a mistake and gone out as it's getting dark. The story ends with the character realizing the mail box is breathing on his hand.

It was in an anthology my mother took out of the library, probably around 1982. My sense has always been that the story was from the 1930s or 1940s, from one of the classic science fiction story magazines... but I'm not certain of that.

touchstone: An Uncomic Book Horror Story

I’m looking for the name of a book and author that I read a long time ago. It is a historical romance set in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. The heroine was placed in a nunnery in France by her father until her wedding but he was placed under house arrest for opposing Queen Elizabeth I. She decides to leave and head back to England with her friend. On the way the ship was attacked by a pirate who took her captive. She convinces him to take her to the queens court. There she requests to be taken to her betrothed and the Queen tasks the pirate to take her there. The betrothed no longer wants to marry her. So, she returns to court and the Queen finds her another husband in one of her knights. Before she can marry him, the pirate captures her again and takes her away.

I thought the book was called “The Game”, but I can’t find any thing like this story.
