Grace and Faith in Luther

One of the first books I read to start this Reformation Era study was Michael Massing’s Fatal Discord: Erasmus, Luther and the Fight for the Western Mind. This book sided more with Erasmus than Luther. It criticized Luther’s use of language and issues that included his opinions on the Jews. Without denying those flaws in Luther, I must admit Luther’s writings deal with issues more central to the Christian faith.

I realize that I have not recognized that in my own opinions made here in this discussion group and that that might not be helpful, especially to those who need the emphasis to be on grace and faith - and who really doesn’t? I wouldn’t want to mislead anyone about that.

Erasmus taught Christian learning and culture while Luther emphasized the gospel of grace and faith. I wouldn’t say that makes Erasmus inessential, but to make a choice between the two figures completely in favor of Erasmus would be leaving out a whole lot.
