Hi,
My mum had this baby name book back in the 90s (no idea when it was published but it was yellowed and falling apart in the 90s). The name meanings could be really poetic eg. If you search for the name Lewanna in baby name websites you'll just get the result 'moon' or similar. This book gave the meaning "a girl so pure they named her for the moon." The name meanings would also include a list of spelling variations, nicknames and famous people with that name.

I cannot remember the name of the book, author or publication date. It was a small paperback, average thickness. The only other name meaning I remember is the meaning for Verna 'a nymph, sunkissed in green.'

I was fascinated with this book when I was younger and now that I have had my own child, would love to see the meaning of his name in this book.

There was a previous request where I wrote, as I'm tempted to now, this may be an impossible one to find, etc. Then in that instance someone immediately found the thing and my jaw dropped. Crossing my fingers for you.

Hi, I wonder if this could be the book:
What's in a name? by Favius Friedman (1975)
I had this paperback book when I was growing up and I seem to remember that it had poetic meanings for names.
I hope this helps!

>3 akblanchard: unfortunately not - I checked with someone selling a copy and it's not it. Thank you though!

>4 bookel: the rose by any other name looks promising but can't find any other information to confirm. If you own a copy, could you please check the meanings of Verna and/or Lewanna?

I'll see if the names are in it. It's not this book. Only Verna is there, meaning "spring-born". Looking at another book I have, Names for your baby by Susan Ross. Verna "springlike". Lewanna "pure white moon". A similar name Levanna "morning sun".

If you would recognise the cover, look on other sites if not shown on abebooks, try browsing baby name books. If not certain you could ask sellers what the name meanings are for the two names.
https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&cm_sp=SearchF...
You could use advanced search to adjust the year range if you wanted to do it by decade.

Ah, another easier option is browse and borrow (free) ebooks and look up the names.

How to Pick the Right Name gives the definition for Lewanna: "Hebrew. 'The Moon.' One who beams with inner radiance" which is pretty poetic but for Verna it just says "Springlike."

The Modern Book of Babies' Names says "As pure as the white moon" for Lewanna, and again just "Spring-like" for Verna.

Stop the presses, I found it! (I am a big name nerd so I loved this query). Name Your Baby by the awesomely named LaReina Rule.
"Lewanna - Hebrew. Lebhanah 'The beaming white one; the moon.' A girl so pure and fair they named her for the moon."
"Verna - Latin. Verna 'Spring-like.' A spring nymph, sun-kissed, dressed in green and crowned with bright blossoms."

Another option is The Very Best Baby Name Book
Both names are in there, and the definitions are the same although a little less flowery.

>11 rarm: oh my god! You are amazing! Thank you so much! The author name even sounded familiar when I read it.
