I am in! As far as I know, I have no responsibilities regarding Dad's estate to handle this weekend and having spent the entire day at his house, I have no wish to do it again over the weekend.

Count me in! I have Monday off for the Juneteenth holiday and will probably be trying to work my way through a glut of library books.

I am in. I work Friday and Saturday evening and am going to a baseball game on Sunday but I'll squeeze some in. *cough* even while on the clock *cough*
I will probably just be reading one book the whole time as it's a big'n.

I am in and hoping to spend afternoons floating and reading after gardening in the mornings. Just started Venice Sketchbooks by Rhys Bowen as part of a Venetian streak that included The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt. It was fun and gossipy: pretty much Midnight in the Garden of Eden set in Venice and the crime was the burning of the Fenice Opera House, which features in Donna Leon's first mystery. I'm listening to Beastly Things, which is #21 in the series.

Sunday afternoon update:
Books read from: Riders of the Purple Sage and Song of Achilles
Books listened to: Beastly Things
Books finished: The Venice Sketchbook
I generally don't track my reading time but probably got in at least three hours as I was able to finish the Bowen book about Venice. It was a good story although it relied on a lot of coincidences. Heading out to the pool right now and not sure what I am taking along to read.

Sunday night update
I will probably keep track of my reading time tomorrow - since it is a holiday.
Books read from: Unworthy Republic by Claudio Saunt. Elephants Journey by Jose Saramago. I am listening to Sentence Is Death by Anthony Horowitz.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Unworthy Republic by Claudio Saunt
Book Thoughts: Unworthy Republic was my June selection for the 75'ers Nonfiction Challenge. The topic was indigenous peoples. I had thought I would read one of the classics on Native American's like Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee but when I did a topic search in my LT Databank I saw this title. We had it in our library so I decided to read it. The book was an academic work and it read like one. This was definitely not an action packed work of narrative nonfiction. However, when I finished reading it I know that I have a much better understanding of the political, social, and economic processes that drove the Indian Expulsion from the American Southeast in the 1830's. Saunt's work is an exhaustive look at statistics that range from census data to voting tallies in the U. S. Congress. This is a book filled with important data and the interpretation of that data. That means that there are facts and opinions backed up by facts found in the research. It gave me a totally different look at the years leading up to the American Civil War and the political forces that came into play. In short, the fewer the Indians in the Southeast the more room for slaves.
On thing that stood out to me, was that the power of the Northern states was very limited due to the 3/5's numbering system that was used prior to the American Civil War. This gave the Southern states more votes in Congress in proportion to their actual population than the Northern States. The numbers of slaves in the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi before 1838 and the numbers after is astounding. The amount of land speculation and stealing from private and tribal members of Native American tribes made me blanche.
The wealth that was accumulated by bankers and land speculators has carried through to the modern day. This book will make you think twice about the effects of this kind of stealing on generational wealth.
Non-Book activities: Had another block party today. The day was hot, but the evening was cool. Very nice time.
Time reading: 2 hours today
Time posting:
Food: I baked a Juneteenth cake today. Chocolate with raspberry frosting. It was good, but not my best cake.
It was very very rich.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 334
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 946 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon back in April of 2020

>23 PocheFamily: Regarding the Vietnam era - my guess: it was a highly politicized & divisive time. Lots of camps with preferred storylines determined to bend the facts to fit their narratives. I won't pretend to have "the answers." I was born in 1958 & the war was over before I registered for the draft. I just remember everyone being upset about it & being scared. What, in particular, isn't matching up for you?

Hope it was a good Juneteenth Holiday
Books read from: Elephants Journey by Jose Saramago. I am listening to Sentence Is Death by Anthony Horowitz and started listening to Line to Kill by Anthony Horowitz.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Unworthy Republic by Claudio Saunt. Sentence Is Death by Anthony Horowitz.
Book Thoughts: I drove to Kansas City today to take my nephew to pick up his Pickup. I got 4 hours of listening done while driving back. That allowed me to finish Sentence Is Death. This is the second in the metafiction murder mystery series Hawthorne & Horowitz. It is good road listening. Good narrator, and puzzling story. It was a successful reading weekend for me.
Non-Book activities: Driving to Kansas City
Time reading: 4 hours today
Time posting:
Food: We ate lunch at the Monsoon Grill (Indian food) in Topeka, Kansas. It was very good and my nephews first experience with Indian food.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 335
