I read this book about 30 years ago and I remember there being two main characters: a young girl (below 10) and maybe a teenage boy. They get separated from their group (which, I believe, included both children's parents) and are kidnapped by bad people. Their journey with the kidnappers down the river Nile is described. One memorable sentence that stuck in my mind was: "I'm not crying! My eyes are sweating!" This was said by the little girl. Although I don't recall the ending, I know it was a happy one.

Was it children's/young adult fiction or adult fiction?

That exact quote is not in the book, but on pp. 113-114 there is this:
(The bit in bold is on top of p. 114)

That exact quote is not in the book, but on pp. 113-114 there is this:
"Nell," said the boy, "Medinet -- that was an illusion, but I know
for a certainty that we are being pursued; so don't grieve, and don't cry."
At this the little girl raised towards him her tearful pupils and replied in a broken voice:
"No, Stas -- I do not want to cry -- only my eyes -- perspire so."

Cool thanks, didn't search the short word nor alternate. Hope that's it. That's why I try to prove it and note evidence when possible. Saves time!

Wow! Thank you so much, everyone! I recognize the names of the main characters (Stas and Nel), and the description of the book fits with what I remember of the story. When I read it decades ago, it was in a different language, so my "not-crying-eyes-sweating" quote was a paraphrase :). So happy I now have the title! Thanks again! :)

>3 bookel: So sweet of you to share! My library doesn't have it, so this will be a nice alternative :).
