Found: Young adult novel about a game that bleeds into reality

Hi all,

Can you help me find a book?

It's set at a boys' boarding school near a forest. The characters discover a game, I think it was a board game, fairly complicated, with a diverse set of characters. The characters in the game correspond to people they know in real life, and events in the game are echoed in reality. I remember it being pretty dark.

I've read it when I was in elementary school, so it must be pretty old. Probably eighties, early nineties at the latest. It's possible it's older than that.
