Friday afternoon update

Books read from: Mushroom Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu. I started Mission: A True Story by David W. Brown. I am listening to East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon:

Book Thoughts: I am about to finish this mystery while I am waiting on my ILL request for a different mystery. This is book 5 of the Crown Colony series by this Singaporean author. I enjoy this books. They are light cozy reads, but they give a different perspective on Singapore just before and during WWII. It is easy to forget that the U.S. wasn't the only country affected by WWII in the Pacific and this series helps to set that record straight. In this book Ovidia Yu tells the story of Singapore as the atomic bombs are dropped. The lack of information about what is happening in the wider world has a big impact on how the Singaporean's react, or not, to the news when they hear about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is also true of the Japanese soldiers as they don't have accurate information either. It makes for some very interesting reading. And of course there is the mystery.

Non-Book activities: I spent most of the day doing some moving preparations that involved boxing a few books, a few small cleaning chores and I watched one episode of season 4 of Star Trek Discovery. I also had an appointment with the optometrist this morning. I had put it off because I thought I would need to find a new one when I moved, but finally decided I didn't want to wait any longer, so went back to my regular. I did ask about getting my records transferred to another optometrist and found out that is easily done.

Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: breakfast casserole for breakfast, a left over hot dog for lunch and a handful of cherries this afternoon for a snack. I am looking forward to supper out tonight with friends.

Friday evening

Books read from: Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay, Difficult Women by Roxane Gay, Middlegame by Seanan McGuire
Books finished: none
Time reading: 1 hr., 55 min.
Snacks: pork taco, blackberry Izze
Thoughts: Took forever to settle on my new main book (The Far Field). I got Difficult Women from my little free library and it's good but distressing--it's my side paper book. I'm still plugging away at Middlegame as my side audiobook, although I want to be reading The Coward but my time ran out and another library patron (or several) also really wants to read it. Middlegame is good until I get The Coward back.
Non-book activities: played Free Cell & Two Dots on my phone; watched Death Note, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and continued my re-watch of Babylon 5 (almost done with the not as good first season)

Total books finished: 0
Total read from: 5
Total time reading: 1 hr., 55 min.

Saturday night update

Books read from: Mushroom Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu. I started Mission: A True Story by David W. Brown. I started reading Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst. I am listening to East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Mushroom Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu

Book Thoughts: I listened to a good portion of East of Eden today while driving to Birmingham. I had read this book years ago and liked it. However, this time around the book is really blowing my mind. It is so well written and the ideas in it are so modern. The writing is great. The plot intricate and well paced. I am surprised at how graphic the book is given that it was published in 1952. There aren't vulgar curse words, but there is lot of sex in it. Very surprised at that and I didn't remember it from my earlier read.

Non-Book activities: I spent most of the day sitting around the yarn shop and drinking tea. I forgot my knitting needles and didn't want to purchase new ones. I had planned to spend most of the day there so I sat and talked and watched others knit. I also purchase some more yarn. How could I not? A yarn shop is like going to a bookstore. That stuff just has to be purchased and taken home with me.

Time reading: 4 hours listening
Time posting:
Food: ham and cheese croissant for lunch and two cups of great tea.

Sunday afternoon update

Books read from: Mission: A True Story by David W. Brown. Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst. I am listening to East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Mushroom Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu

Book Thoughts: I took 1 hour to just sit and read today. I didn't watch TV and I didn't do anything else - just read. I also took about 30 minutes to read before I got dressed. I read about 60 pages in the wonderful narrative about the space mission to Europa - Mission: A True Story by David W. Brown. This is a gloriously irreverent look at the crucial astronomical and planetary space missions in the solar system. It is great fun to read and even at 400 pages it flows easily. I am learning so much about funding for NASA projects and there is lots of information about "soft money" (grant money used at most universities and research labs to fund projects. I knew about grant money and how it works, because I spent most of my life working with people doing research on just such projects, but this book makes me laugh at the crazy way that most of these projects are funded. I can tell this book is going to be a top read for me.

Non-Book activities: I had brunch today with a good friend and had a great time with him. I am doing laundry and later will start cleaning the bathroom. I have neglected it far too long. I doubt that I will go to the swimming pool today as it is cloudy and likely to rain. I am getting tired of being chased out of the pool by the lightening police. Most likely I will end up spending an hour at Starbucks in the late afternoon before I start watching my Sunday night PBS shows.

Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: bagel, cream cheese, and cafe au lait.

>19 benitastrnad: I liked it quite a bit, Benita, and gave it 4 stars. There is a sequel too, but it appears to be not as well received. I will likely read it at some point in the future; however, the first book is complete on its own - you do not need to read the second book.
