What book is on your nightstand now?

"Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov.

It's an adult fiction novel about a man who obsessively desires his step-daughter.
I'm half-way though and am, at this point, pushing myself to finish it. I think I'm having trouble not only because the novel is so disturbing (I usually like some degree of disturbance), but because it's so far removed from any experience I've ever had.
Did you ever have to read something you couldn't really relate to at all?? That's how I feel about "Lolita."
I'm going to force myself to finish, though! If it's the last thing i do....

Apr 26, 2008, 3:08 pm

I just read King Dork and had the same problem. I enjoyed the book, but it just took me forever to get trough, around two weeks. (which is a long time for me.)
Hmm, I've heard of Lolita, but I've never personally read it. But all I've heard about it has been good. So I guess I encourage you to keep going?

I've never read King Dork, but i've heard a lot about it as well.

I have this "problem" with finishing books; I'll be really interested and read the 1st half in a very short period, then my interest just switches off and I have to force myself through the rest of it.
One of the librarians @ Sunset reccommend that I not continue reading these books because there are too many other good books to waste time on the not-so-good ones.
To some degree I agree, but I also feel invested half-way through and hate to give up.
And so I toil...

i've never read any Dumas.
i'm more of an artsy person than a history person.
but i do sometimes enjoy this genre in film -- historical fiction movies like "man in the iron mask," can hold my attention longer than text.

urrrgh. the 'band' situation, it's... intersting.
we have a total of two members, like sixty songs, but we haven't actually had any practices? haha.
But I sing and do like keyboards and crap like that and we have a guitarist who's pretty good at writing music.
we're just on the search for a bassist, drummer, and possibly a second guitarist....

hmm.... maybe i should clang the cowbell too?

64Courtneylee1984
May 30, 2008, 8:26 pm

that's so awesome!

we should have a talent show!!!
(do you think anyone would come to that, though?)

ray likes to sing. you should ask him to be in your band.
(and don't listen to him if he tells you that he plays the guitar. he doesn't.)

it's hard to find time to read while on vacay, i know. have a blast, take lots of photos, try everything!!!
(you can read when you get back :-P)

and, btw, i love how this website has turned into the bree, emily, courtney correspondence page :).

65rawrbree
May 30, 2008, 8:45 pm

Haha. I'm on vacation and I have already read three books today. I'm currently reading Big Fat Manifesto, it's decent, but I'm trying to get through it quickly so I can get on to The Bell Jar. (Obviously, I have been to the library within the last couple of days, due to the fact that I am no longer reading the same two John Green books over and over again)

Wasn't this page just always a Bree, Emily, and Courtney corespondence page??

Wow, I miss the library a little too much... NERDFIGHTERS! (Courtney, you will not understand this, only Emily will, it's far too complicated, so I attempt not even trying to.)

Hmm... Today, I started putting the Entire Written Collection of Bree on LiveJournal. I'm about a fifth of the way through. What can I say? It's a very long and draining proces...

I. Want. John. Green. at. the. Sunset. Library.

End of story.

Emily says:
Do you actually enjoy books or just absorb them?

Well, to answer your question, I do both. I remember the majority of books, I can basically tell you a plot summary of every book I have ever read. (From sixth grade and up) I also remember the oddest details from books. For example, I can tell you that in Looking for Alaska (Which is another possible name for the upcoming band), Miles Halter calls four 'Male Entertainment Agencies' (also known as Guy Strippers), before he reaches one who is willing to participate in the prank that they are going to do in memory of Alaska Young.

Also, I'm really good at remembering names of characters...

yeah, it's hard for me to recommend books, too.
but usually it's because i don't like books that others normally like, and my favorites are books that people will hate if i recommend them.
same with movies. i have yet to meet someone who likes and dislikes the same movies as me.
and i think i am an awesome critic!
(people just don't know...)
lol.
:)

Now I'm reading Love and Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain. (stupid fucking touchstones)
I recently just got back into him and I was absolutely amazed by how many people actually believe the conspiracy theory that Courtney hired someone to kill him (or killed him herself). There's so little evidence! They're making a big deal out of nothing.
For example:
After Kurts suicide attempt in Rome, Courtney is pictured riding with him in the ambulance. The book states that a major clue that she tried to kill Kurt is because her makeup is immaculate.
HELLO PEOPLE! SHE'S COURTNEY FUCKING LOVE! WHEN WAS HER MAKEUP NEVER NOT PERFECT WHEN SHE WAS WITH KURT!? SERIOUSLY! IN EVERY PICTURE OF HER FROM THAT TIME PERIOD SHE HAS GREAT MAKEUP!

and nobody cares about the content of this post.... (except Emily will flip about the explictives...)

my stepmom is a big reader. as is my little sister.

and my mother has started picking it up.

and my father has read the newspaper everyday since I can remember. Usually cover-to-cover.

but I didn't really start to use the library until I was 12/13, when Phyllis was my librarian.

See, for me, not reading is an oddity. It's as if I had always been reading and it's hard to imagine not to be. There's no clear line from when I was not, to where I began. I just remember that I started reading abnormally early.

that's awesome, though!

what do you want to be when you grow up, bree?? lol.
(besides a professional reader. bc i don't think those exist. bc i would definitely be one if they did.)

Weeeell, what I really want to do is major in Journalisim and minor in Library Sciences at Columbia University.
From there, hopefully, I will be a staff Reporter at AP Magizine (Alternative Press) and eventually get my Graduate's in World Cultural Studies?
But this is me dreaming big....

Dream away!!!
That sounds amazing!
And you can do it. That's even more amazing!

Bree, minor in something that you want to write about/cover when you are working in the 'real world,' as a journalist.

As a journalism major, assuming you mean print journalism, any newspaper you work for will put you on the general 'reporting' beat unless you have are a specailist (sp?) in something, thus some reporters minor in education b/c they want to write about education, while others minor in political science, etc., etc.

And if you want to be a columnist, don't minor in journalism, pick something you are confortable writing about, and run from there.

And you should dream big...always dream big, b/c as Courtney said, you can do it. But not only that, you WILL do it, and that's amazing.

Weeeell, my goal is to write for AP Magazine. Which is an alternative music magazine (and also doubles as my Bible.) I've talked to people who work there and they say as long as you have some general College Journalisim education, I should be good.

But today, I'm going to apply as a Staff Writer for AZTeen Magazine.

:)

SIDE NOTE OF SUCK: I failed algebra 2 again, which means I now how to take it for the THIRD time. And it's not because I didn't try, I was it there getting help from my teacher four hours a week.
and yet I still failed....
