Mom's doing very well. She had an appointment yesterday and now the doctors say she can stand and walk a little bit! Mentally she's still confused but very slowly getting better.

I will be checking in but have a busy weekend coming up. I hope to finish Singapore Grip this weekend, but given my schedule that may be a stretch.

I, too, appreciate your hosting these threads. It's an excuse to hunker down at home and read as well as check in with LibraryThing. We have a very mellow weekend and I plan to finish 1619 and Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church, an early reviewer book.

And, I am ready to start a new thread to take me through the end of the year!

I loved the Jackson Brodie books by Kate Atkinson. I haven't read the new one - yet. I also have the Little thieves series waiting for me. Can't wait to hear what you think of them.

Friday report
Books read from: Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India by Sujatha Gidla. Singapore Grip by J. G. Farrell. I am listening to Yellowface by R. F. Kuang.

Books finished: 0

Book Thoughts: I like Singapore Grip a whole lot. It is grim but so very funny. This is in contrast to Yellowface which is trying so hard to be grim but funny and just not quite making it.

Non-Book activities: I started knitting a sweater out of worsted weight wool and am wondering if I will ever wear a sweater that heavy. Climate change is affecting everything, including what weight of wool a person uses to knit a sweater.
Time reading: 1 hour
Time posting:
Food: Whataburger double cheeseburger and fries for supper. They have banana milk shakes on special this month and I really like them. I think that will have one for lunch tomorrow.

Book Thoughts: I am not making much progress on Singapore Grip. I have only read 15 pages today, but I knew that I wouldn't get much reading done today. I hope to be able to read a bit more after I get the porkchops into the oven where they will bake for an hour. Yeah! An hour of reading time.
Non-Book activities: I am cooking pork chops today. With bacon and sauerkraut and will take it to a pot luck supper tonight.

Sunday night report
Books read from: Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India by Sujatha Gidla. Singapore Grip by J. G. Farrell. I am listening to Yellowface by R. F. Kuang and started All the Old Knives by Olin Steinhauer.

Books finished: Yellowface by R. F. Kuang

Book Thoughts: I finished listening to Yellowface by R. F. Kuang and am disappointed in it. I wouldn't call it a screed but it is close. It reminds me of The Other Black Girl, which I read two years ago. Both books are about the problems that people of color have in breaking into the publishing industry and in getting their work considered for publication. It is about microaggressions and stereotyping along with pigeonholing authors as people of color who can only write books about people of color. An underlying theme is the dangers of current social media in all of this and how many people believe that they only matter if they have social media accounts and followers. I found the book sad but true with regards to the evils of social media.

I will finish reading Singapore Grip before I go to sleep tonight.

Non-Book activities: I drove up to Birmingham and that hour in the car enabled me to finish listening to this book. After I returned I spent the evening watching Masterpiece Theater and knitting on my fingerless mitts. It is an interesting pattern, but it is hard work for those little mitts.
Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: Indian food for lunch and coffee at a locally owned chain in the afternoon.

weekend wrap

Books:
Still reading
Razorblade Tears
The Giver of Stars, audio ed.

For his BD I gave my husband American Prometheus and Brave Companions: Portraits In History.
Picked my 10 book choices for bk club this next year. List to be finalized at bk club mtg this week.

Weekend sort of got away from me.
Made a spontaneous trip to Cary NC to look at homes for sale and spent the night. We're probably going to move to the Durham/Chapel Hill area within the next few months.
Had dinner at my niece's last night. They served lovely lobster ravioli by coincidence! Did you know Oct 1 is World Postcard Day and you eat ravioli on that day because ravioli resemble postage stamps!

weekend wrapup
Books read from: Ants Among Elephants: An Untouchable Family and the Making of Modern India by Sujatha Gidla. Singapore Grip by J. G. Farrell. I am started listening to a good old style spy thriller, All the Old Knives by Olin Steinhauer.

Books finished: Yellowface by R. F. Kuang. Singapore Grip by J. G. Farrell

Book Thoughts: I finished Singapore Grip and had a great deal of fun with this book. I came into it with some knowledge of the Japanese campaign in Malaysia and South Asia and I think that foreknowledge allowed me to keep track of what was happening politically and militarily so that I could better understand and appreciate the social criticism that Farrell was doing. Ending colonialism was still a big thing happening around the world in the 1970's when this novel was written, so I suspect that the novel had more relevance when it was published than it does now, and along with that, an audience that would understand the cynicism, sarcasm, and black humor that is on full display in this novel. It was a pleasure to read. I sat here and got lost inside the story for long minutes at a time.

Non-Book activities: I spent and hour or more trying to find a recipe this morning. It has slowed my day and put me behind.
Time reading: 1 hour last night before bed
Time posting:
Food: coffee and yogurt for breakfast and watercress salad for lunch.
