This is driving my son and I crazy for the past three days. We've both read these, but neither of us can remember the titles. Please help!

Sci Fi Trilogy

Book 1: Snow scene where a box with AI talks to the main guy and helps him escape an ambush because it knows future events. A house where this AI is being held get srigged to blow up after they infiltrate it.

Book 2: There is a cave with buzzing sounds, deep in the desert. When they finally get in there, they are some sort of large insects.

Book 3 (We think the word "Sky" is in the title): Abandoned military (Air Force) base with some sort of portal underground where futuristic tech comes through sometimes. A specific item keeps coming through that is too heavy to move and will eventually block the portal or collapse the floor. Eventually, the characters end up talking to older versions of themselves on the other side of portal?

Possibly the John Barnes Century Next Door series? It is the actually the 4th book in the series that has the word Sky in it:
The Sky So Big and Black

But the series includes an AI in the form of a copy of software that everyone has in their minds that allows limited telepathy and is called "One Truth". The 3rd book Candle does include several scenes in a cave where one of the last 'cowboys' (a human without the one-true software in place, is hiding.

More about the author is at:

The full series is:

Orbital Resonance (1991)
Kaleidoscope Century (1995)
Candle (2000)
The Sky So Big and Black (2002)
