Mom's doing really well. She's able to go to a nursing home as soon as we get things worked out with the insurance.

>2 SilverWolf28: here's hoping it gets worked out soon.

>2 SilverWolf28: That's good news. It's been a long travail for you and your mom.
Count me in to read this weekend.
Currently engrossed in Speaks the Nightbird by Robert McCammon.
Listening to audio edition of The One and Only Ruby
I'm starting early. Laying low today after a slight reaction to covid shot yesterday.
I don't have to cook. Husband making spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. :)
Cloudy, 45 F.

Friday night report
Books read from: By the Sea by Abdulrazak Gurnah. Long Retreat: In Search of a Religious Life by Andrew Krivak. I am listening to Coral Thief by Rebecca Stott.
Books finished: House of Always by Jenn Lyons
Book Thoughts: I finished House of Always in the Denver airport and started By the Sea by Gurnah. I read one of his books earlier this year and thought it was very well done so wanted to read more by this author. I am reading it along with Paul Cranswick for LT. Gurnah is so elegant of an author and tells such a convoluted tale with such calm elegance that it is easy to read. I understand why he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. I only have 40 pages left to read, so hope to have this book finished by morning.
Non-Book activities: I didn't move more than 30 feet all day. I was exhausted from the trip so spent most of the day sitting in my chair and knitting on my sweater. I am getting ready to start the sleeves.
Time reading: 1hour
Time posting:
Food: Indian food with friends tonight while we all recapped our Thanksgiving trips.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 371
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1062 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon in April of 2020.

This year I have been rereading and reviewing the Louis L'Amour books on my shelf that I hadn't reviewed yet. I decided to reread Radigan last night. It's one of the author's better novels, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I've also washed my dog and cut her nails, and did site work in the backyard for two additional raised beds. I won't plant until Spring so there's time, but the weather has been cooperative, dry and mild.

Saturday night report
Books read from: By the Sea by Abdulrazak Gurnah. Long Retreat: In Search of a Religious Life by Andrew Krivak. I am listening to Coral Thief by Rebecca Stott and Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land.
Books finished: House of Always by Jenn Lyons
Book Thoughts: It's too late to write. I will write more tomorrow.
Non-Book activities: I went to my knitting class today and had a great time with the small group that was there. Most of them left early as they wanted to watch the SEC football championship. That darn game was all anybody wanted to talk about. I am just glad that there are no more games here as the traffic disruption makes living here unpleasant. It is a good thing that football only affects me for 8 days out of the year.

Sunday afternoon report
Books read from: By the Sea by Abdulrazak Gurnah. Long Retreat: In Search of a Religious Life by Andrew Krivak. So Shall You Reap by Donna Leon. I am listening to Coral Thief by Rebecca Stott and Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land.
Books finished: House of Always by Jenn Lyons. By the Sea by Abdulrazak Gurnah
Book Thoughts: By the Sea is a gem. If you are monitoring this thread and like literary fiction (aka books that are well written) then this is your cup of tea. Beautiful, elegant, classic wordsmithing. Clear sentences that are not spare, but seem that way. Gurnah deserves all the literary accolades that have come his way - including the Nobel. Great writing. I will be reading more by this author. He is absolutely in a world class league. I have listened to half of Stephanie Land's book about being a maid and I am hating this book. If she would just stick to writing about the difficulties of being in poverty, but she keeps writing about how much she wants a "family" and the make-believe middle class "family life." I find myself snorting and yelling at the recording "grow up. We don't all get what we want, and most of that supposed middle-class family life isn't wonderful." If it were then we wouldn't have over half of the marriages ending in divorce. I think her ideas are pure envy fed by the dream world she saw on TV. Enuf said about this book.
Non-Book activities: I spent the morning phone call free. Yeah!!! I got to knit and listen to my travel shows about Japan. However, I am working on a difficult cable knitting pattern so I did have to pay attention to that so was somewhat distracted from my favorite TV shows. I am totally bummed about the football game yesterday. The idiots won. It is a good thing I won't be in town in January.

I decided on another reread, Reilly's Luck. It's not grabbing me, too much inculcation of a child by a mentor.

Sunday afternoon stats:
Books read from: The Cat Who Moved a Mountain by Lilian Jackson Braun; Maximum City by Suketu Mehta; The Rebels Apothecary by Jenny Sansouci; Ces enfants d'ailleurs by Arlette Cousture; The Illustrated Book of Signs and Symbols by Kathryn Wilkinson
Books finished: 1, Ces enfants d'ailleurs by Arlette Cousture
Time reading: 6 hours (it's sleeting!)
Time posting: 3:45 pm
Snacks: Homemade applesauce
Thoughts: Ces enfants d'ailleurs by Arlette Cousture is a good example of fiction that doesn't age well: one of these 1980s sagas designed to fill long afternoon and a gossipy book club meeting, not that there's anything wrong with that. I just prefer my books with more substance and less melodrama.
Non-book activities: quick walk to check on Lottie, the River Otter, who lives behind my house.

Books:

Gorgeous day - sunny, 63 F. (17 C.)

It also had appeal for me because it was a work of historical fiction set in Korea before 1900. There isn't much about Korea that is set in the Imperial days of that country. That is a shame as it was a very unique culture.
