I can vividly remember portions of the series but not enough to find them.
I think I read these books in 2013 or 2014, and they were probably published in the late 2000s or 2010s.
All I can remember:
- There’s a trio of siblings, the eldest is a girl, pretty sure the middle is a boy, and the youngest is a girl with dyslexia or some other reading/writing impairment
- Their father recently lost his doctor’s job in a medical malpractice suit (which we learn in the next book happened during the big earthquake in San Francisco which was caused by some greater evil that infested his mind and made him carve an eye symbol into his patient’s chest)
- The siblings somehow enter a fantasy land/alternate dimension and are seeking a way out, but are relentlessly pursued by this being they call the “wind witch” (I’m pretty sure it’s wind but it might be something else with a w) who seems to be unstoppable.
- At one point they meet a British pilot who references the Great War
- In the end of the first book, the trio get possession of a page that will make whatever they write on it come true, but the dyslexic sibling had to write on it. She’d able to finally successfully write, and has the wind witch sent to “the worst place in the universe” and them taken home with 10 million dollars for their family. They find themselves hone like nothing happened, but their dad finds out that he won the lawsuit and gets the $10mil from that.
- In the next book, we learn that the money has been more of a curse than anything else, and that the eldest daughter is experiencing drastic behavior changes and her body is starting to deteriorate. It is revealed that the wind witch was banished inside of the eldest daughter and is regaining her strength to escape because “the worst place in the universe is inside the heart of a teenage girl.”
I vividly remember these details and there being an image of the wind witch that definitely frightened me as a child. Past these things, my memory is annoying blank. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh my god, I think I'm thinking of the same book!

What a coincidence that you couldn't figure this thing out either, and you're also on this forum, didn't expect that at all. I didn't remember anything about a wind witch, though, but let me know if any of the details I wrote about check out with you.

>2 nginsparg: Oh my God that does sound like this book. The names are for sure the same. I could be mashing details from another book I read around the same time - do you remember there being sequels?

Yes I think there were sequels!
I just can't remember anything after the first one... :(
I certainly only ever read the first one; at that point in time I believe the rest of the series hadn't been published, but the ending had a bit of an ominous cliffhanger tone to it.

I don't think you're mashing up details; everything that you mentioned are details that I totally forgot, but now fit right in;
i.e.,
1) The youngest has dyslexia (which allows her to use the book without the downsides? or I know she has to struggle to not mess up the final wish)
2) Exposition: The father loses his San Francisco doctor job because he went into a trance in the middle of an operation and carved an eye into a patient's chest. So they move to an old relative's house (who possibly disappeared?), in hopes of finding some relief from that weirdness, or something.
3) The British pilot is Will; he indeed does reference the "Great War."
4) The "Wind Witch" is possibly the corrupted author.
5) The last wish has the youngest sister send the "Wind Witch" to “the worst place in the universe," and turns the pilot alive. They return home like nothing happened with 10 million dollars to pay off the lawsuit.
