This book was in my middle school library sometime around 1998, so should have been published before 2000.
It's fiction, probably YA since it was in a pre-high school library, likely fantasy (involving magic) but I'm fuzzy on that. If not fantasy, the setting is definitely pre-modern technology.
I think the protagonist was a young woman, there was a white stag or other deer-like species that featured very prominently that the women may have ridden, and the plot had to do with some sort of special golden box that the women I believe had possession of and possibly needed to go on a journey to bring it somewhere.
My best recollection of the cover art is that I think the white stag was the prominent feature, and otherwise the dominant color of the cover was dark, cool tones. Blue, purple, black -- something along those lines.
These are the details I can recollect to the best of my ability, but I could be wrong about something as well.
