Extending Erasmus-Luther study

I have 2 more planned books left in my Erasmus-Luther study for this year. They are -

Luther: Letters of Spiritual Counsel, and,
On the Jews and Their Lies, also by Luther. I’m over halfway done with Luther’s _Letters of Spiritual Counsel_. Another book that I have not considered is Luther’s Table Talk. I don’t think I will add that one to my study, even though it is probably very rich in insights.

But I am considering 3 more books to read and finish by February, 2024. They include -

Luther’s Jews: A Journey into Anti-Semitism, by Thomas Kaufmann. I found this one at a used bookstore over the weekend. It is not a long book and would be a good complement to _On the Jews and Their Lies_. It also has some importance to me as a subject. How our western societies deal with anti-semitism reveals how we are doing with respect to many of our most deeply held values. It is also timely now because of what we are experiencing in reaction to the Israel-Hamas war.

The last 2 are biographies of Erasmus and Luther. The one on Erasmus is -

Erasmus, Man of Letters: The Construction of Charisma in Print, by Lisa Jardine. This one, like Erasmus and the Age of Reformation by Huizinga, might negatively view Erasmus, but, if so, I’d like to try to respond to that.

The second one is on Luther -

Luther: Man Between God and the Devil, by Heiko Oberman. I’ve only read the one biography of Luther, Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet, by Lyndal Roper. Biographies have been the most fun to read in this study, and this one may help to congeal my thoughts about Luther.

I do want to get on and read Machiavelli, but I’m finally feeling like I’m getting somewhere in this study - I’m beginning to have some thoughts of my own about Erasmus and Luther - so, why not finish the study (as much as I can)? Also, I feel like it would not be too bad to shorten the Machiavelli study from 15 books to about 9. Then I can probably end the Machiavelli study by December 2024.

Still don’t have as much time as I would like to read, so I’m progressing slowly.

Beginning to feel like I had a little success with this year’s study. I struggled with some of it, but I covered a fair amount of territory. That was good.
