The Book is Fiction
I read it in middle school roughly 10 years ago (2013)
I remember the title having something to do with the words "dark". As in "The Dark" or "The Black". This might be only part of the title.
I read it in Florida, USA.
Intended audience was def Teens/Young Adults.
For plot I remember the main character was younger male in high school. His grandparent(might be father) was an explorer who died tragically when he was younger and gave him this necklace or kind of keep sake (I believe a golden ball of some kind). He was told to keep it safe. One day in a rage he threw it against the wall and the whole was was covered in blood that disappeared when he looked back. Slowly paranormal events starting happening to the climax where this evil spirit began chasing and trying to kill him. The keepsake was protecting him till he broke it. Only he could see and interact with it until he told someone about it, then that person could see the spirit too however most of them would be killed by it because of him telling them. That's all I remember.
