Professor, novelist, poet, and editor Fred Chappell died January 4 at the age of 87. His books include I Am One of You Forever: A Novel and Brighten the Corner Where You Are. 🥺RIP I was supposed to go hear him once but was deathly ill and sent my ex. I did get a signed copy of the Fred Chappell Reader out of it.

Photographer Kishin Shinoyama died January 4 at the age of 83. His works include Santa Fe 宮沢りえ , Accidents 1: Water Fruit , The Sixties by Kishin, and Yukio Mishima: The Death of a Man.

British political advisor Derek Draper died January 4 from post - covid complications at the age of 56. His books include Create Space: How to manage time and find focus, productivity and success and First Hundred Days.

>6 varielle: I heard his story "The Beard" on "Selected Shorts" back in 1996. Never got to see him in person, but what a great writer. Was also poet laureate of North Carolina.

Erwin James died suddenly on 19 January 2024 aged 66. He started his career as a newspaper columnist while in prison for murder, writing a Life Inside column for the Guardian in the UK. He wrote three books: A Life Inside, The Home Stretch and Redeemable: A Memoir of Darkness and Hope.

>34 varielle: I looked up Ivor Browne because, as well as being a very young age to die, I think qualifying as a psychiatrist by the age of 24 would be pretty difficult. He was in fact 94 (born 1929).
