Fiona Talkington presents a concert recorded in the Berlin Philharmonie last October, with Jakub Hrusa conducting the Berlin Radio Choir and the Berlin Philharmonic in a performance of Dvorak's Stabat Mater. The work stands as one of the towering monuments of choral music and was once one of the most popular works in the choral repertory. There have been other great musical settings of Jacopone da Todi's 13th-century poem Stabat Mater, but Dvorak's is by far the longest and most serious. Although conceived and written on a massive scale, this setting focuses primarily on two very personal aspects of the poem's emotional world, those of grief and of solace. Dvorak: Stabat Mater, Op 58. Corinne Winters (soprano), Marvic Monreal (mezzo), David Butt Philip (tenor), Matthew Rose (bass), Berlin Radio Chorus, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Jakub Hrusa (conductor).

Fiona Talkington introduces a performance recorded earlier this month at the Philharmonie, Berlin, with Christian Thielemann conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in two Bruckner rarities, starting with the very beginnings of his symphonic journey. Bruckner's F minor Study Symphony is a product of his early twenties, a student work that was never performed in his lifetime and which he himself called a school work. The Symphony No 0 in D minor (Nullte) was composed in between the first and second symphonies in the Bruckner canon. Its German moniker came about when, years later, as Bruckner was preparing his symphonies for publication, he was still smarting from its rejection by a conductor and wrote the null symbol three times in the score, along with the words invalid, completely void, and annulled. Yet this is the symphony that will make every Bruckner fan feel instantly at home, able to enjoy and recognise much that they love about Bruckner's mature symphonic style. Bruckner: Symphony in F minor, WAB 99 - Study Symphony; Symphony No 0 in D minor, WAB 100 - Nullte. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Christian Thielemann (conductor).

Internationally renowned string quartets the Engegard Quartet and Quatuor Voce play classics of the repertoire by Haydn and Mozart at LSO St Luke's. Mozart's string quartets K 464 and K 465 are the final two of a set of six dedicated to Haydn after Mozart had studied and been deeply impressed by Haydn's groundbreaking Op 33 quartets. The Dissonance Quartet got its moniker from its famous bleak opening, where unresolved clashes sound as each instrument enters. The Emperor Quartet is from Haydn's last complete set of string quartets. In the late-1790s. Haydn was acknowledged as Europe's greatest living composer, father of the string quartet and the symphony, with newly written and hugely popular oratorio The Creation storming the continent. The quartet gets its nickname from the tune used in the second movement, a self-quotation of an anthem written for Austrian emperor Franz II, which eventually became the national anthem of Austria-Hungary and then Germany.
