I am in as much as I can be, Silver. I am hoping that the foundation guys get done tomorrow as it is very difficult for me to read while they are pounding on my house, lol.

Count me in. Just finished Comanche Moon by Larry McMurtry & am starting Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene - my first shot at a Greene novel & am looking forward to it.

>4 ChrisG1: I envy your first foray into Greene! LOVE his books but still haven't read them all; I have already re-read the ones I originally read. Does that makes sense? I just loved them and wanted to re-read for both the assured pleasure and to see if I got more out of them - I did - and I rarely re-read anything.
I'm in-in-in for this weekend's read-a-thon! Perfect weather for it and I'm wayyyyy behind my own reading goals: I enjoy these read-a-thons so much for helping me make my own goals a priority!
I'm hoping to finish up Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots and The Piano Shop, and make some progress on The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire and Mozart. Need to finish those first two before I can feel on top of my reading again!

Children's author Kate Banks recently passed away. As I'd never read any of her works I borrowed several from the public library.

Friday night start on reading
Books read from: Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos. I finished listening to Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson and started listening to Longmire Defense by Craig Johnson.
Books finished:
Book Thoughts: I have had a run of bad and mediocre books lately. Summer Before the War was totally a washout. This was a book that should have never been published. I did finish it because I was trapped in my car and had nothing else with me to listen to. Except for that I would have cut my losses on this book and quit. Cider With Rosie is such a good book that it makes up for the two bad ones I just finished. I am about to finish reading it. Sing Them Home is for a book club of mine and I was surprised to learn that it is set in Eastern Nebraska, so is about an area with which I am familiar. I started listening to Longmire Defense for the mystery series group read here on LT and I really like the Longmire books, but don't really like the narrator of the series that much. I think that is because I listen to books in the car and I have trouble hearing this narrator and understanding what he is saying. Especially with place names. For that reason I like to have a hardcopy of the book with me. I find that I need to look up names of places in the hardcopy. With this book I was out of luck at the library, as the hardcopy of the book was checked out.
Non-Book activities: I packed a box of dishes today and got the bed ready to move. Washed the sheets and folded the blankets. I decided that the comforter and pillowcases were going to the thrift shop tomorrow. The colors simply won't work in the bedroom in Kansas. I am disconsolate because I loved that comforter set when I bought it, but it is a different house and there is a comforter there, so I will move on.
Time reading: 1 hour early today
Time posting:
Food: supper with friends at a Thai restaurant. We celebrated a birthday of one of our group and we talked about me getting ready to move as well as the aging process.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 399
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1105 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon in April of 2020.

>13 benitastrnad: I can't listen to audio books, I envy you. And I'm glad you can donate special items to others. I have a couple martial arts uniforms that I've not worn in 25 years but they represent a very important part of my life...so they're still in the hall closet.
Friday:
I dropped off an Amazon return at Staples, and then a few books to a local thriftstore. Later, after a friend stopped by and fixed my lawnmower, I mowed the spots in the yard that were tall and green, then threw bags full of clippings in the chicken yard. It made them happy.
One more book last night:

Zin! Zin! Zin! a Violin! by Lloyd Moss
>10 Carmenere: thank you. I need some bright distractions right now.

Driving home from Florida; just passed Georgia’s Golden Isles and the Marshes of Glynn.
After a slow reading week getting into Down Here We Come Up and liking it so far.
Breakfast at the Beach Diner before we left.
Other activity:
On the beach early for sunrise photos and a last beach walk. Said goodbye to my sister-in-law who joined us this week.
Cloudy and mild, 77F/25C.
Just started raining, tornado watch… TORNADO WATCH?!
What’s up with that…?!

>14 fuzzi:
I loved Zin! Zin! Zin! a Violin back in my school teaching days. It had so many classroom uses including music. The illustrations were fun as well.
I also have trouble getting rid of things. I have lots of clothes that I have sewed for myself that I can't bear to part with. I know that if I take them to the thrift shop they will be put into the trash bin because they don't have labels or sizes in them and I simply can't bear to do that. I will be hauling those back to Kansas. I am planning on donating my shoes to the theater department at the University, and that will take care of them. Mostly I will be moving books. I have six bookcases of books and books in boxes under each of the beds, not to mention those stacked on the floor in my office.

Saturday morning report
Books read from: Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos. I am listening to Longmire Defense by Craig Johnson.
Books finished:
Book Thoughts: I am almost finished with Cider With Rosie. I have 19 pages left in it. I was just too tired last night to finish it so will do so while eating my lunch today. I am driving back to Kansas this next week and so requested two more recorded books from Inter-Library Loan and both of them came in this week. I had already checked out two books to listen to on the way to and forth and so now I have a plethora of books to listen to while spending 4 days on the road.
Non-Book activities: Not much other activity this morning. I will head to U-Haul to get the glasses and cups boxes and a smaller box to my serving dishes in and will do that on Monday. I am also slowly working on my taxes. I have friends coming over to help me move the bed out of the bedroom later this afternoon so will load it into the van. Then I will settle down and read this evening.
Time reading: 1 hour early today
Time posting:
Food: breakfast was a piece of sourdough bread with Huckleberry Honey on it and some good coffee.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 399
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1106 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon in April of 2020.

I finished Beyond the Body Farm this evening. I listened to a little bit of The Longmire Defense while I cleaned this afternoon. I got a lot of laundry done today. I spent more time than I intended to using the experimental full text search interface for the wills and deeds on FamilySearch. I did take a break for a while this afternoon when my neighbor called and asked me to meet her family for lunch. I'm not looking forward to losing an hour tonight.

Sunday report
Books read from: Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos. I started Ends of the World: Volcanic Apocalypses, Lethal Oceans, and Our Quest to Understand Earth's Past Mass Extinctions by Peter Brannen. I am listening to Longmire Defense by Craig Johnson.
Books finished: Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee
Book Thoughts: I finished Cider With Rosie and really liked this book. I liked it so much that I requested the next in the series of 4 autobiographies/memoirs written by Laurie Lee. I started reading Ends of the World and read 50 pages in it. I am reading this one for the LT Nonfiction Challenge. This months category is Forensic Sciences and what bigger forensic science could there be than to learn about mass extinctions and how they are being studied? So far I learned that they have determined that the level of CO2 determines the climate of the earth and to measure that they actually measure the number and weight of the various Oxygen isotopes in rocks.
Non-Book activities: Got the bed loaded yesterday and it was more work than I remembered when I moved it into the house. Even though the van is huge, it has nice soft rounded curves in places that didn't accommodate the box springs or mattress that easily, so it took three of us to get it into the van. The upside is that I have plenty of room for the dishes and a few other things as well. I was glad for the help. This morning, I went to get my normal Sunday morning cappuccino and had to go to a different Starbucks as my local Starbucks has closed and won't reopen until the end of the month and in a different location. The city has been getting after them regarding the traffic congestion they are creating with the long lines that spill out onto a main thoroughfare from the drive through. Apparently, Starbucks determined that it would be easier to build a whole new building than to change the drive through.
Time reading: 1 hour early today

Weekend went by way too quickly ...
Books read from: Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots: Tales of a Submarine Officer During the Height of the Cold War, Frank Hood (Kindle); Mozart, Jan Swafford (paperback); The Resisters, Gish Jen (Audible); Cocktail Time, P.G. Wodehouse (Audible); The Piano Shop, Thad Carhart (paperback).
Time reading:
Fri: 5h
Sat: 4h
Sun: 3h
Snacks: tea, coffee, cereal; and a fabulous new pie recipe - Mock Coconut pie, made with the last few little spaghetti squash we harvested last fall - surprisingly good!
Thoughts: I wish I was a faster reader!
Non-book activities: dog walking, attending a new local library’s SciFi book group, chatting with my Dad
Total books finished: 1 (should be more but I got too chatty on Sunday)
Total read from: 5
Total time reading: 12h

I really enjoyed Our Man in Havana when my book discussion group read it a year ago. It was a surprise because I didn't expect it to be funny, sarcastic, and cryptic.

weekend wrap
Books finished:
Down Here We Come Up
Who Has Seen the Wind? An Illustrated Collection of Poetry for Young People
Dixie Ghosts: Haunting, Spine-chilling Stories from the American South
My intention was to give this last title away but there were references to books by the individual short story authors, all popular in the 20th century. I may have to seek out some of these.
19 books read so far in 2024; 7 from TBR shelves.

>36 benitastrnad: I had no idea what to expect - I think it's a situation comedy in the best sense of the term.

I have one more chapter to read in The River People, so technically I didn't finish it this weekend.
But I've been enjoying it SO much that I went online and found a couple more of the author's nature books.
So much for reading off the shelves...
