ROBINSON CRUSOE

I dont know if anyone would find this interesting or not. When Reading the Newbery/Honor books, they often name other books being read, within. The book most often named so far, is Robinson Crusoe.

First mentioned in 1925; again in the 30's; 40's; 50's; 70's; 90's and in the 2000's.

An interesting time capsule of a work definitely a back drop of my life; that I feel is little mentioned or recognised by those born after the 90's.

cool fact! I'd love to see a list of what other books are referenced. And how many of the later books reference previous award winners and honors!!

I thought that I had posted this once. I started it and I add to it with most every book. It is a bit of a chore. Someday, I will have to go back over books that were read in childhood, but I dont promise. Not every book gets mentioned in the list because several aren't already catalogued here on LT. I wish they had a way to let you add non-catalogued books - then the list could be truly complete.

So - Robinson Crusoe has now been replaced - by one - with the Bible being mentioned in 7 books; Crusoe - 6 books.

Interesting fact. In early 2000s Because of Winn-Dixie (takes place in Florida), the main character reads a book aloud with a Black woman. In the original, they read Gone with the Wind. In the current version, they read Great Expectations. The author decided Gone with the Wind was not a good choice. I totally agree with this edit, personally.

>6 rebeccareid: Current edition? It has been changed already? I have it; had it; just gave to grandson; I don't even recall which book they were reading- but I suppose it must have bee Gone With the Wind. I haven't read that one- but I'm sure my mother did. That genre of fiction has seldom appealed to me. If I had read it by high school I might have enjoyed it.

>7 EGBERTINA: yes the book is about 25 years old? I think. The author requested it be changed as she felt differently about including Gone with the Wind.

>8 rebeccareid: Funny. I suppose it has something to do with the change of what is considered appropriate in literature.
