My particular friend introduced me the Aubrey Maturin series several years ago and I am proud to say I have completed the series seven times (so far). We have had endless fun sharing the various expressions, phrases, and words used masterfully by O’Brian. It gives me joy to share and explore some of these elements of O’Brian’s wonderful and rich literature with other fellow fans.

I regret not taking a picture of the bumper sticker I saw a few years ago: "Aubrey/Maturin 2020: There is not a moment to be lost!"

I could get behind that ticket.

Two of my favorite O’Brian expressions that Jack often says to Stephen are “so there you are” and “you astonish me.” In both cases, I sense they are used more out of genuine affection than as a reproof. Throughout Jack’s many commands, I enjoy the way O’Brian develops these two characters and their relationship as conveyed by the expressions they use.

I love three of the adjectives used by O’Brian throughout the series: capital, prime, and prodigious. I try to work them into everyday talk at work: “…I’m late because of a prodigious meeting that ran over…” or “….what a capital powerpoint presentation…” or “…the sales team has a prime opportunity to take market share from our competitors…” Unfortunately, none of my colleagues are O’Brian fans so I can only share these words with my particular friend…
