Read this sometime before 1995, but I believe it was published substantially earlier, possibly in the early 1980s. A teen girl with genius-level intelligence begins having precognitive dreams about the 'Big One' striking California; she learns survival techniques and lives through the earthquake, then journeys into the mountains in response to a feeling she's being called. She finds a group of similarly-gifted teens who think they've been brought together to form a community, but a faction that believes they're a superior form of humanity wants them to dominate the world.
I suspect this is out-of-print; I can recall nothing about the title or author, and so many books with vaguely similar premises have been published since I read this one that it's a needle in a haystack. The only truly identifying detail I can recall is the importance of the earthquake and her preparations for it, although that's merely the beginning of the plot.

>1 Melendwyr: I haven't read it, just searched by your description, but could it be Mind Call?
1981, start of a 3-book series.
eta: or maybe it's Mind Hold

I read all three this year!
They're on openlibrary.org.
1. Mind-call.
2. Mind-hold.
3. Mind-find.

I agree with the earlier posters; that ought to be Mind-Call by Wilanne Schneider Belden.

>2 vorkosigan: OMG, you've located it. I couldn't have described the cover, but I can recognize it still, and that's totally it.
Thank you, *thank you*, THANK YOU.
(edit) I've been searching, using various terms, for years. How did you find it so rapidly? Am I really bad at research, or am I missing some obvious way to winnow down the results?

>5 Melendwyr: Oh, nice! I'm glad that's it.
I don't remember exactly, but I know I found it on a Loganberry Books site using words from your description. I was just googling, no system or anything.

>6 vorkosigan: My own Google searches kept returning books purporting to expose the existence of psychic powers, not YA fiction *about* precognitive teens. I couldn't find a way to exclude all the infomercial-esque books from my results.
Well, however you did it, I'm thankful.

You could search alternate terms like ESP. Find a list on LibraryThing with ESP children's books (I created one years ago). Search worldcat.org for earthquakes juvenile fiction with year range. There are various things you can do. Enjoy rereading!

Personally, I read it years ago in the school library, eventually tracked down a copy, and have re-read my copy relatively recently, so I recognize it because I remember the story tolerably well - and I remember the earthquake prep sequence at the beginning particularly. That part stands out so it makes it much easier to recognize.
