Last year I read Catalina, expecting it to be one of Maugham's lesser works. I found it well worth reading... entertaining with some hidden gems!

Glad you enjoyed it. Not a bad way to finish fifty years of writing fiction, is it? And a great tribute to Spain. Please consider writing a review. Maugham receives so few these days - and mostly so superficial that it's painful to read them!
I am currently trying to muster enough courage to read the most famous Spanish book of all time, which Maugham claims to have read five times from cover to cover: twice in English, thrice in Spanish. Wish me luck. :-)

I read an abridged version in a college class, and only years later realized how much longer the full work is. I might try it again, but doubt that I can get through it. However, I have an older colleague who loves the work, and in describing laughs in joy at the escapades of its protagonist
