Creating Our Own Awards

I've been toying with an idea. What books would we have picked?
Here are some of my criteria:
1. loved it beyond all reason as a child reader (let us say under 20); even if you might not agree with your child-self, now.
2. beautiful literary content
3. had significant impact for some reason.
4. goes above just average enjoyment. for instance i read black beauty at 7 and to me - its just average. i enjoyed it- but no long term delight.
5. any genre; any time period; written in any year

we can collect our thoughts here or make an individual list that we post; or both

Here is most of my list. There are some books that were series and I read the whole series - but I din't list them all. (maybe later) also, as i look at this I think most were read by 17. There was a significant pause in my reading until late twenties.

Here is my list of hated / indifferent. The problem with so many of the indifferent is that they were so well-written, but i just couldn't find a point or connection. Often, I found the subject matter questionable, such as in The Underneath. This was so hauntingly written, but animal abuse for kids? I had similar concern throughout the 90's. Well developed character sketches, but, I couldn't find a point or redeeming grace to the work; abuse of handicapped, alcoholism... I read a lot on domestic violence, but they are not children's books. I guess, there is reality, and there is something that conveys a hopeful carefree perspective. IDK, I'm not sure I would bother to read, if I were a modern child. I feel as though the older Newberys (also having deficiencies) were attempting to broaden children's horizons. Themes of abuse and alcoholism, do not broaden in a positive way. They either reinforce status quo, or broaden horizons in the opposite direction. Of course it is all terribly complicated. Here is my list:

Here is a list for best Newbery Honors. I didn't start this one, I just borrowed it. most of them were in here. It is almost too hard to pick honors, consistently. There are so many; and so many ways of liking them.
