October Reading and Book Talk

Hello all! I'm sorry I didn't keep up that past little while. I had a total knee replacement and I thought I'd be able to get some reading done during recovery. It turned out that the first few weeks I didn't really read because I couldn't focus. I don't know if it was the pain meds or what. I was also super tired all the time. I'm starting to finally get out of that. So nice to see a few names chatting. Since tomorrow is the last day of Sept. I'm starting this thread as an October reading and place to talk books in October.
Did you read anything fun in September?
Is it feeling like fall where you live? It has been quite hot here this past week.
Are there any new releases coming up that you are looking forward to?
Do you belong to a book club where you live?

Happy Reading - M.

>1 sdbookhound: Hello! Hope your recovery is going well.

I read a fair number of books in September, but not as many romances as I usually do. For various reasons I ended up with more "women's fiction" and "literary fiction" in September. But I did fit in several fun ones, most notably the first book in Sarah M. Eden's Dread Penny Society series, The Lady and the Highwayman, and a re-read of book 1 of the old Jane Castle (JAK) Guinevere Jones series, The Desperate Game. Though the first was set in Victorian England, and the second was contemporary to the 1980s, they had a similar feel of romantic suspense romps.

Here in South Carolina it is not feeling much like fall yet. Summer came early, was VERY hot and is still lingering . . .

For new releases, I have an ARC of Roseanne M. White's An Honorable Deception that I won through the LT Early Reviewers program. I am really looking forward to that. And waiting not-so-patiently for the next book in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, Wind and Truth, due out at the beginning of December.

Yes, I am in a book club in my neighborhood, but as a group, we tend to gravitate toward literary fiction, biographies, and occasional women's fiction. It keeps me from getting stale reading my favorite genres over and over. :=)

How about you?

>2 tealadytoo: I've read the 1st installment in the series from the library, enjoyed, and plan to buy the remaining novels. I've read and own most of her British historical novels. Bonus for me: Roseanna M. White is a Maryland author!

Greetings, all!
The good news is that I only have twenty pages left in that stupid book I'm reading for a church committee. (That's also sort of the bad news, too, is that I still haven't finished it. I swear I am finishing it tomorrow night after I get home from a day trip to the Wisconsin apple orchards near Gays Mills.)

The ultra bad news is that I didn't finish a single adult read in September. Yikes - it's been a while since that's happened.

The moderately good news is that I have kept renewing my Lucy Gilmore library books and will start them on Thursday. I'm subbing on Thursday and will have two free periods, so I'm reading!

>2 tealadytoo: Yes, it is going well so far. I just try not to over do it.
I also like women's fiction and some literary. I'm a mood reader, so you never know what I'll decide I want to read.
I've always wanted to try Brandon Sanderson, but I don't know what to choose. Any suggestions?
I see you are in South Carolina. I hope all is well with you after the hurricane. In know it didn't hit there so much as western NC.
I am in a local book club. There are ten of us and I'm the youngest at 59. Lots of different likes as far as books so it is always interesting. My pick for my month this year was The Boys by Ron and Clint Howard. Everyone enjoyed it.

Thanks for chatting!

>5 sdbookhound: Hello - Yes, I am in the area of SC that was not badly affected by Helene. Such sad stories from the NW part of the state and NC/GA.

For Brandon Sanderson, I'd recommend starting with his first book, Elantris. That will give you a feel for his writing without committing you to one of his multi-book sagas. (Though I hear that 10+ years later, he is now going back to the Elantris world and working on sequels.)

The Boys sounds like fun. Maybe my book club will take it up! I live in a 55+ community so we are all of "a certain vintage" too. :=)

>6 sdbookhound: Finally - I finished it! It did not leave me feeling more loving. Instead, it is driving me to murder. Specifically, Richard Osman's We Solve Murders. The romances will be up next.

Here we are at the end of October! How does time go so fast?
I have had a lot of personal stuff going on in October, but still got a little reading done. With several being ARCS for review.
We Three Kings by Kristen Bailey (loved 5 Gold Rings by her last year and this one was fun too.)
In Italy for Love by Leonie Mack (just discovered this author this year and have enjoyed the two books I've read)
Fire by Abby Brooks (which was just ok)
With You Always by Jody Hedlund (First in a series - Christian Historical - Read for my book club)
Between Sunsets by Leah Omar (An author from Minnesota that I discovered through LT Early Reviewers)
A Very Irish Christmas by Debbie Johnson (Just finishing up this one for review)
Slap Shot Surprise by Melanie Harlow (Hockey and Surprise Pregnancy - I thought it was just ok)
You With a View by Jessica Joyce (I'm still working on finishing the audiobook for this one. So far I like it.)

I leave reviews for nearly every book on this site if you want to read what I have to say about any of these. Do you leave reviews here or just star ratings? Personally, I have a hard time with the star ratings.

Happy late October! I've read quite few books this month, but not many romances (not for any particular reason, just how it fell out this month.) A couple that I really liked were Jayne Ann Krentz's Lightning in a Mirror and Sarah M. Eden's The Gentleman and the Thief. Although they are completely different styles, both are favorite authors of mine. I generally don't post reviews with the books, unless they are ARCs, just star ratings. I think because I've found so many odd and suspicious reviews on various sites (though this site is better than most) that it makes me feel odd posting reviews of my own. I do write reviews in a couple of the groups here I frequent where I pretty much know and trust my fellow posters.

>11 tealadytoo: I have done Early Reviewers for a long time. I don't request every month, just when the book truly grabs my interest. I also do NetGalley. This site is where are put the bulk of my reviews or thoughts on books even if it is just a few sentences. That way I can remember something about the book.
I want to be more active on these message boards.

I'll post a November thread tonight. :)

Melanie
