I read like half a chapter of a book, realistic fiction, probably no later than 2006. I'm not sure how much of the book this bit took up--it might have been a really important subplot or it might have been just a small section. A woman was staying somewhere near the ocean, and she was hostessing in a restaurant at least part time. She started seeing a man who was best friends with the restaurant's chef, who was also a woman--the main character started getting a little jealous because the man and his friend had a standing dinner date possibly every night but at least every week, at some hour like midnight or 2am because of her work as a chef--he'd prioritize this over spending time with the main character. I think he revealed that the chef might have been terminally ill or something. I remember that after hostessing the main character was starving and she ate some crackers cooked by the chef and probably had family dinner with the other restaurant staff after closing. The chef was extremely talented.
