A fairly short chaptered novel read to a UK class of 8/9 year olds around 1969/1970. Featured 2 girls, possibly sisters, visiting not living Japan I think. Mentioned tea ceremony and kimono descriptions. Also described paper sliding screens and they may have been pictured on the cover.

Thankyou but definitely not that book. That wasn't a book series we used and although what I remember was a novel it was more information/realistic based and possibly aimed at a higher age group.
Sorry for so little detail, it was a long time ago!

Books from the right period in Worldcat, these all look to feature a brother and sister though:
Visit With Us In Japan 96 pages, a US publication
Ann and Peter in Japan, part of a series called "The Kennedys Abroad"
Our Japanese Playmates

Found! By chance I heard the title mentioned on BBC radio 4 and have just listened to a dramatisation. I had the gist but it wasn't sisters in Japan it was about 2 cousins and one of them makes a Japanese doll house and the story is told partly by the 2 dolls, describing their house, the paper screens, tea ceremony etc. I remembered as soon as I heard the title - Miss Happiness and Miss Flower by Rumer Godden 1961.
