Fiction read in the 1990's or 1980's USA, before cell phones were common, YA.
A teenage girl lives with her parents and younger sister. The father doesn't let the women have any money. The girl wants to escape, so she figures out how to get money and hides it in a birdhouse. She also gets her father to buy her cloth to make secretary-clothes out of. She spends a lot of time cross-country skiing and can't even buy a coffee at the lodge. Her sister gets some sort of cocoon, but helps it when it's trying to hatch and it dies.
