Totally Tubular, Dude

Didn't GSS used to have some sort of tag for Damsels in Tubes? Here we bring some balance to the sexes with The Dude in The Tube.

He was a test-tube baby.

I think we had a general tag for "people in glass tubes" because it comes up so much in this biz.

Looks like they got bigger test tubes in the future.

@TorMented, he seems to have been a test tube full-grown man. Or at least partly grown, there seems to be a giant gash down the middle of his torso that hasn't come in yet, not to mention the absence of meat and two veg.

So what are those people in back standing around for?

"I spent two hours waiting in line to see Man In a Tube, and, frankly, I want my money back!"

>5 GSSex-noob: Maybe the naked guy is a time traveler. Travel by tube, shall we say.

>6 bam2001: No wonder the crowd's staring! A naked man pops into view in early 20th C England and he's going to attract plenty of attention.

I picture a bobby just off-screen running in to ask "What's all this then?"

He's lucky he didn't pop into 21st C America, in that case.

(There's a whole collection of them here: https://www.pinterest.com/bcduval/people-in-glass-tubes/ )

>8 bam2001: Not finessing the racism even an angstrom!

The caught-in-mid-dance couple look surprised at that even back then. "Martians are green, sonny, everyone knows that! And the wily Orientals don't have that big of heads! Could Fu Manchu commit his evils if he was always toppling over?"

(This comment brought to you by knowing many people who were adults when this was first printed.

Adults from very near that big river they got. My grandma never got past using those words and she didn't die till the late 70s. Although the NwithR word was one she *never* used, and she and grandpa used to sometimes teach in the Negro school in town, because they knew it was definitely separate but not equal and everyone ought to know how to read, write, and do simple math. Grandpa was an engineer and taught the boys a bit of that plus basic math and science, and he shamed his local Rotary fellows into getting textbooks printed after WWI. Grandma gave all her used but still working kitchen utensils/pans to the school so the girls could learn to cook upscale white people food with decent hardware, and taught them some fancier sewing on a scavenged Singer. But Jack was from Up Nawth near t'other end of the river originally. He was the only man in town who owned ice skates and used them now and then, mirable dictu!

I cannot speak as highly for my aunts/great-aunts of the same era, however, nor the generations of cousins who I don't talk to and are undoubtedly all wearing red hats and shooting guns as you read this, because there hasn't been a Yankee in the family since Jack was born in 1888, and I couldn't stand the ones my age for more than a few hours at a time even as a kid. Grandma's roomie after their husbands died became my "real aunt" because she was half-Yankee. She was, as they said back then, a real pistol and very kind. Loved her.)

Oh, and thanks for the Pinterest link! Though some of them are just domes, eggs, or bubble helmets, and what size do you expect for the poor sod in The Space Coffin?

I like how the comics kept dames in tubes even longer than the SF mags did. The Shadow cover is from 1978! Although back in his day, super-science still required glass. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of tubes?

Must resume loading my leftover photos from the GSS.uk years; they will deserve most of the old hashtags, but no tubes IIRC.

>10 GSSex-noob:

I think you can still find a tubed dame in a comic book now and then.
