Thriller, man hiding in house

I read this book about 25 years ago, in one of the Reader's Digest condensed versions. It is a fiction book.

A woman is convinced someone is coming into her house because whenever she gets home she finds things moved around. Turns out that it is someone hiding in her basement and moving around when she is not there.

This sounds like one of Barbara Vine's books, I think I recall one where a stranger was secretly living in a woman's house, but I don't remember the title.
