Another list!

These are some titles on the transition from the Medieval Period to the Early Modern Period. Initially, I just wanted to find books that would help to explain the Medieval theology in the “Bondage of the Will” debate between Erasmus and Luther. But the list has grown a bit. If others have suggestions, they will be appreciated. I don’t want this to become a long list, though, like some of my others.

General Introductions -
1) A World Lit Only by Fire: The Medieval Mind and the Renaissance: Portrait of an Age, William Manchester (1992)
2) The Waning of the Middle Ages: A Study of the Forms of Life, Thought, and Art in France and the Netherlands in the Dawn of the Renaissance, Huizinga (Dutch ed. 1919)

Introductions to Thought -
3) Medieval Thought: The Western Intellectual Tradition from Antiquity to the 13th Century, Haren
4) The Medieval Theologians: An Introduction to Theology in the Medieval Period, ed. Evans

Texts -
5) Late Medieval Mysticism, ed. Petry (Library of Christian Classics)
6) A Scholastic Miscellany: Anselm to Ockham ed. Fairweather (Library of Christian Classics)
7) Devotio Moderna: Basic Writings, ed. Van Engen (Classics of Western Spirituality)
8) Conciliarism and Papalism, ed. Burns and Izbicki (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)
9) Advocates of Reform, ed. Spinka (Library of Christian Classics)

Historical Summaries -
10) Forerunners of the Reformation: The Shape of Late Medieval Thought, Oberman
11) Studies of Political Thought: From Gerson to Grotius, 1414-1625, Figgis
12) The Age of Reform, 1250-1550: An Intellectual and Religious History of Late Medieval and Reformation Europe, Ozment

I guess it would have been better if I had started with this study, but my goals have developed sporadically; so I’m slipping it in just before “The German Reformation: Luther, His Allies, and the Radicals.” See my long list - “A Multi-Part Outline.”

Now, also, I have, “A Tentative List of German Reformation Books.” It’s a long list of theology, history, biography and literature from Reformation Era Germany. (02/05/2025)
