Hello, name that book! I am looking for a fantasy novel I read in the early 2000s, while I did my level best to read the entirety of my public library's science fiction/fantasy section (most of them above my maturity level), but also did not write down any of the dang titles.

Here's what I vaguely remember:

I think everyone in this book was born with a special talking animal twin (not pullman's daemons - just one concrete animal, and they're born from the same mother). The main girl (perhaps village leader's daughter? I keep thinking 'chief's daughter') was a freak for being born without an animal. It turns out later that she absorbed it in the womb, and as she grows up she transforms into a wild, nonspeaking fox while sleeping, but is totally unaware.

There's a boy who is in unrequited love with her. She ends up pregnant because her fox transformation AHEM makes friends with a gentleman fox, and the boy is accused of rape. There was a character who could tell if someone told a lie, or their animal twin could. During questioning the boy is asked if he desires her, and he denies it out of panic, and since that was a lie he is judged guilty. He's condemned to death, or his animal twin is. The boy escapes, something tragic happens, I don't remember what exactly. Later the main girl miscarries the half-fox-half-human fetuses.

I think at the end the boy and girl reunited?

I want to say that the cover had a girl's face, or a fox's head, or both, and that it was mostly brownish.

For a really long time I was positive the title was the Fox Princess, but I think I was mixing that up with The Jaguar Princess (which also features a girl who turns into an animal, but is a very different book).

Any ideas? I'm probably misremembering a lot, but some parts of this have stuck with me all this time. Would love to re-read it.

update: the new cover art for the kindle edition is bad enough that I'm probably going to order a used paperback instead, even if it costs more. yeesh.
