The Bhagavad Gita - 2011

This is not a book that is easy to read, but contains pearls of wisdom that must be teased carefully out of the words.

Extracted from the far larger Hindu epic, The Mahabharata which runs to a hundred thousand verses, the Bhagavad Gita is a battle-field conversation between the Lord Krishna and the Indian prince Arjuna. The advice given to Arjuna in this text has become the cornerstone of the Hindu faith.

Sections of the text have inspired philosophers and authors as varied as Huxley, Jung and Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is a description of the constant battle of good against evil and the attributes of both. The eighteen discourses in the Bhagavad Gita discuss Arjuna’s worries, fears and difficulties with the problems of life. It is a handbook of practical wisdom, humanity and inspiration.

This xix + 97 page Folio Society edition is introduced by Anna Bhushan and was translated by Juan Mascaró. It contains 26 very different colour and 2 black & white illustrations by Anna Bhushan, some integrated, some full page and one double-page.

The book is quarter-bound in mid-blue cloth with Modigliani paper sides printed on the covers with dark blue images, and a large rectangular gilded picture is blocked onto the front cover. The dark blue endpapers are printed with a yellow pattern. The plain blue slipcase measures 28.7x19.2cm.

The illustrations by Anna Bhushan are exceptional, both sympathetic and appropriate for this book. I was unfamiliar with the FS edition of Bhagavad Gita but it is a little gem.
