I was watching Twisters and remembered this book I read years ago--I couldn't say when. All I remember is this scene from a tornado. It talks about several different people who get picked up and carried away--twin boys, I think, one dies the other survives. A mule maybe--were the boys riding it? One guy, the tornado rips his clothes off but doesn't hurt him at all. And one guy who gets carried all the way up and kind of shot up above the storm for a minute. It talks about how peaceful it is, even as he knows he will plunge to his death.
Country of Origin: US, I'm pretty sure
Fiction: I'm not sure if it's strictly about the tornado or if this was just one part of the plot. Weird what the mind holds onto.
That's all I can remember--sorry!! Any help is appreciated.

I think there is an anecdote like this in one of the Little House books, probably These Happy Golden Years. I seem to remember the brothers on mules and the person whose clothes were torn off, and an entire house that was destroyed except for the door. But I don't remember the peaceful person above the storm.

Agreed.
He felt a jerk of the harness breaking apart, and then he must have fainted. For the next thing he knew, he was alone in clear air. He could see the ground beneath him. He was being carried around in a circle...
That next week Pa heard in town that the bodies of the lost boy and the mules had been found the next day. Every bone in them was broken. The clothing had been stripped from the boy and the harness from the mules ...

Thank you so much! I think you're right. The part about the guy going above the clouds must be from a different book and I just put them together in memory.
