Jake Heggie's operatic version of Herman Melville's epic, Moby-Dick, with Brandon Jovanovich as the implacable Captain Ahab. Karen Kamensek conducts, live from the New York Met. When he does emerge he tells them of Moby-Dick, the white whale that took off one of his legs. When tragedy strikes, contempt turns to suspicion and Peter is driven to breaking point,and Borough's inhabitants begin to look and behave like a mob. Georgia Mann is joined by expert commentator Iain Burnside for a double bill of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci from Bavarian State Opera, recorded in Munich last month. Cavalleria rusticana tells the story of Turiddu, a soldier who learns his love Lola has married another while he was away, so seduces Santuzza in order to spite his ex-fiancée. Lola and Turridu eventually begin their own affair, pushing her husband Alfio to take violent retribution. Pagliacci concerns a travelling theatre troupe that includes the clown Canio, his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio. Canio suspects Nedda of carrying on an affair, and those suspicions lead to violence during the performance of a comedy, which, coincidentally, closely mirrors the tangled affairs of its cast members' lives.
