Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is here. Amongst the sales, barbeques and opening of the shore for the summer season some of us take the time to remember.

To remember those who went before us. To remember those who did not come back. To remember friends.

Gene, Brian, CPT Marty, SSG Irizarry.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Laurence Binyon-For The Fallen (1914)

I'm leaving soon, for a year or more. As I look at the faces of my troops I see how young they are. Children to me. I've been in longer than some of them have been alive. I ask the Good Lord for the strength to bring them all back, whatever the cost to me. I'm not afraid for me, only of failing them.

I've made it a point to meet their families and loved ones. To let them look me in the eye and know who I am. To know that I will watch over them as if they were my own children. Because they are.

Thank you. I hope you know you have the heartfelt gratitude of so many of us for taking that kind of care.
