Historical fiction children’s series about a red-haired girl who travels by ship and has a doctor father

I’ve been trying to remember a chapter book series I read as a kid (around 2014, but the books themselves may be older). It was a historical fiction series aimed at a juvenile audience, definitely middle grade.

Here’s what I remember:
- The main character is a red-haired teenage girl with wild, long hair. She’s pictured that way on the cover of at least the first book.
- She lives on the East Coast of the U.S. (I think), but travels by ship possibly to the West Coast. I originally thought it was through the Panama Canal, but I might be misremembering that detail.
- Her father is a doctor, and I specifically remember that she assists him in surgery in one of the first few chapters of the first book.
- She goes to boarding school at some point in the series.
- The setting is historical, probably 17th-19th century, maybe before the height of Manifest Destiny.
- The title of the book (or books) probably includes her name.
