#1 has a nice article with b&w illustrations on the bookbinder Philip Smith, and also notes the resurrection of the Shakespeare Head Press with an address in Oxford. It's first two titles were to be Max Beerbohm's Zuleika Dobson, and The Diary of Frank Sidgwick. Sidgwick was partner to A. H. Bullen in the original Shakespeare Head Press.

Recent Press Books

The Attic Press; (William A. Shell, Richmond, VA). Robert Archer. The Night After Christmas. 1975. Hand-colored illus. by Eleanor Shell. Miniature book, 2 x 2.5". 60 copies.

Harold Berliner, Printer (Nevada City, CA). 1975. Haniel Long. The Power Within Us: Cabeza de Vaca's Relation of His Journey from Florida to the Pacific. Preface by Henry Miller. Designed by Wolfgang Lederer. 47 pp; 750 copies in Lutetia types; brown buckram.
Reviewer note: "...thanks are due Mr. Berliner for making a significant text available in attractive format. First published in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in1936, Long's Interlinear to the Narrative of Cabeza de Vaca, as it was first called, poignantly recreates De Vaca's narrative of his odyssey among the Indians and allows him to describe his revelation as he divested himself of his exploitative European attitudes. Miller's perceptive view of the piece as a modern paradigm first appeared in an edition published in London in 1946."
Nota bene: I have this book and it makes an excellent companion to the Narrative itself, which I have in the Imprint Society edition.

I love seeing these listings. A great mix of many fine books and presses that I know well, plus several that are completely new to me.

>1 Glacierman: Re: Harold Berliner's Genesis. He did eventually publish it from Nevada City in 2004, with woodcuts by Helen Seigl. I remember seeing a few copies on Etsy (of all places), sometime pre-COVID. I think that seller was somehow connected to his family.

Good stuff once more! The only one I have from the inventory is Master Peter Patelan, courtesy the Merker sisters. Unicorn is an interesting press from what little I've seen firsthand of their output. And I have a couple of the Five Trees books mentioned on my perpetual wishlist (the Doolittle and the Levertov). Thanks again for gathering and sharing these gems.

>3 DenimDan: OK...he obviously took it up again. The seller you mention was probably his daughter, as she is selling his back stock here and Genesis is listed. Guess I should have checked there first!

>5 Glacierman: Well, now that you've put the link here, they won't be available much longer. I've ordered Knights and Valentines just now, and I scarce believe I'm the only person here putting a purchase in.

>3 DenimDan: >5 Glacierman: I happen to have acquired a copy of this on the advice of this forum's oracle. It's a lovely book and generally quite well-priced (although I did pay considerably less than the listing mentioned above, I still would consider it a bargain at that price).

>5 Glacierman: Further info on Harold Berliner. His daughter Judith Berliner still does presswork through her company Full Circle Press. Interesting bit of trivia there about how her father co-authored the Miranda Warning ("You have the right to remain silent...") when he was California district attorney and he began his press business imprinting plastic Miranda cards for police officers.

>10 Glacierman: Nice, I wasn't aware of that review. Good work, should have figured you'd know this stuff already. I almost picked up that volume from Full Circle as well, may go back for it if I enjoy the one I did order.

This tremendous thread has now netted me 1) a 1988 Okeanos Press reprint of the Haniel Long's imagined Cabeza de Vaca letter, and 2) The Imprint Society version of Cabeza's Narrative. The second book arrived with a listing of other Imprint Society books available from the same bookseller, which netted me 3) Benito Cerano and 4) Warre's Sketches.

>1 Glacierman:

Thanks!

>12 kcshankd: This tremendous thread has now netted me... 3) Benito Cerano...

Don't forget to check out The Sea and the Jungle (also illustrated by Garrick Palmer) and King Solomon's Mines (reviewed here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/339881 ) - both by Imprint Society.

>14 mr.philistine:

Thank you.

For the curious, there are several Imprint Society threads that turn up in a search of the forum that provide quite the overview.

Erskine Childers' The Riddle of the Sands, illustrated by John O'Connor and designed by Will Carter, is another Imprint Soc. title worthy of inclusion in your library.

Adding to the Imprint Society digression, I can recommend Daphnis and Chloe (pleasingly illustrated) and Novelle Cinque, both of which can be found at bargain prices.

>18 Lukas1990: Prices do seem to vary wildly, but there are some real deals on it as you've found. You might find better shipping rates from one of the sellers on Abebooks.
