Allyson Devenish picks her favourite recording of Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor D 958. Franz Schubert's last three piano sonatas were written during the final months of his life, between the spring and autumn of 1828. Their grand scale and complexity was at odds with-19th century fashion for small-scale piano works, so they remained neglected for many years, but the sonatas are now considered among the most important of Schubert's mature masterpieces. The C minor sonata is by turns bold, dramatic and melancholy, with nostalgia for Schubert's beloved Mozart. 3.45 Record of the Week. Andrew's pick of the past seven days.

Andrew McGregor presents the best new recordings of classical music. 2.05 Pianist Kathryn Stott selects her pick of the best new releases. 3.00 Sarah Lenton chooses her favourite recording of Mozart's opera Cosi fan tutte. It was the composer's third collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, following The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, and was first performed in January 1790 in Vienna. The title literally translates as So Do All Women and the plot concerns two engaged couples who swap partners at the instigation of the men, who are waging a bet about women's fidelity. The subject matter did not offend Viennese sensibilities of the time, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries was considered risque, vulgar and immoral, and the opera was rarely performed. From the mid-20th century it gained a reputation as one of Mozart's most sublime scores despite the work's outdated views, and the opera has a very rich recorded history. 3.45 Record of the Week. After attended the work's debut, critic Émile Vuillermoz praised Ravel for his profound invention and freshness of inspiration, and yet the composer appears to have taken the concerti of Mozart and Saint-Saëns as a structural model, even declaring that the concluding movement was conceived in accordance with the most immutable traditions.
