Found: Portals and Crater Lake

So I read a book on ibooks back in 2011 or maybe 2012? I remember it being probably YA or for middle schoolers. The main character was a boy who had the power to visit his past lives. He had two friends, I think a boy and a girl. For some reason he could open portals and one of these portals was in Crater Lake. There is a scene where an old man appears and talks with the boy and its later revealed that the old man was "The old man of the lake" which is a tree trunk that floats through Crater Lake. I think it ended with his older brother being detained in some facility that he tried to get him out of and some agents trying to capture them which makes me think its the first book in a series.

I think the cover page had a red door in the woods but I'm not too sure.

It is not Crater Lake: Battle for Wizard Island by Steve Westover.

I've been trying to reread this book for so long! I hope someone here has read it or knows of it.
