Looking for this book. It's a historical romance I'd say. I can't remember the name of anyone or anything in it. I probaly read it at least 5 years ago but I think the book was published much earlier.
It's set somewhere in America, small town. The girl owns a farm-ish house on the outskirts of town, her husband dead and she's pregant (I think she has 2 already besides) and a guy shows up on her farm. He's fresh out of luck - went to prison for killing a woman who was trying to kill his friend (I think) and is bumming around. She's considered kind of a wacky weird girl. I think maybe her dad was a preist or something. The husband was older and nice but mostly married her to not be alone or something?
I remember there is a scene where she's invited hero in for some food and he's really jaded from prison and thinks she's mocking him when she's asking if he wants more and then kind of just is amazed someone is nice to him when she gives him more butter and bread.
I think she offers to get married or for him to stay and help with the farm. They fall in love pretty slowly. There is honeybees on the farm but she's scared of bees. There is also a car he gets running.
I think he worked at the mill at the start but got fired or it was just a one day gig.
Once they've sort of gotten together it's gearing up towards second world war 2, and he joins volentarily becoming like a SEAL or something. And she sells stuff that's rationed while he's gone (honey, eggs, her old husbands scrap metal).
I do think she goes to see him when he's back teporarily or shipping out and that was an emotional moment.
Fast forward to after his return, I think he gets hurt enough to get sent home but not too much. He is now considered a hero after having fought in the war and done some important thing. I think he's going to study at the university. Maybe he became friends with an old librarian too?
There is a girl who sets her eyes on him but she has another lover and he kills her after hero has rejected her but tries to blame it on the hero, it's a kinda dramatic is he going back to jail or not I think.
Anyone got some ideas?
