I read this in the last year. Cannot remember the name or author. Centers around two school girls who are unlikely friends (I believe one was the daughter of a teacher). One of the girls is murdered. She's found in a snowy field because birds were circling over her.

There is a man who lives alone. He is delayed mentally/socially. Was living with his mom before she died. She was abusive. I think he ended up burying folks in a bog? Something about a ribbon, maybe from his sibling that his mom caused the death of?

The two girls stopped during a holiday at his house to knock on his door and had a drink. He is suspected as he has previously been suspected of a different crime. But it's not him.

One of the girls was a student film maker. One of the detectives tries to understand what she is trying to say with her film.

I believe this happened on an island, remember them having to wait for a ferry for more resources I think. And I'm kind of remembering Scandinavian vibes. In addition to the holiday of the young folks knocking on doors and having drinks, there was also a festival of some sort with a parade. And a child, I think it's the detectives child, goes missing during that festival.

Told from different narrators points of view.

The kid was kidnapped by a rich young man, found in a van. She is fine. I cannot remember who ended up being the killer. May have been the friend. May have been the rich young man. There was something about a coat or scarf she was wearing too.

You're very welcome! I couldn't have told you the plot of that book if my life depended on it, but you remembered so many details that it came right to mind! :)
